As part of the grad school's new requirement for annual progress reports, students must have complete/review their Plan of Work (POW) regularly.  Plans of Work are created, saved and submitted online via Student Self Service in MYPACK Portal.  This replaces the previous paper process where students collected committee members' signatures. Students do NOT need to submit the POW each semester, but review/revise it for the advisor to review before signing the semester progress report. The committee members do NOT need to be filled in for this review.

Students should review their Plan of Work (POW) regularly. Plans of Work are created, saved and submitted online via Student Self Service in MYPACK Portal. Students do NOT need to submit the POW each semester, but review/revise it for the advisor to review before signing the semester progress report. The committee members do NOT need to be filled in for this review.


Submitting the POW

Before you can schedule your prelim oral (for PhD students) or final oral (for Master's students), your POW needs to be submitted, approved by your committee, approved by a DGP, then approved by the graduate school. The POW can not be submitted until all committee members are specified.

  • For Master's students, the committee member will be assigned by a DGP. So, once you've entered your courses on the POW, email Pam to fill in a committee member and submit the POW.
  • For PhD students, you should meet with faculty to request that they serve on your committee, then add those who agree to your POW committee. You can submit directly when you have added all courses and committee members.

When a student submits their POW, each faculty member listed on the advisory committee will receive an email invitation to serve and to approve the POW. Instructions for students can be found at Graduate Student SIS training manual. Please note that PhD students should still approach faculty members by email or in person to discuss serving on the committee first. The on-line submission is only for documenting everyone's approval. [Note: as of now, Master's students can't submit with only two committee members, the system kicks it out, so email Pam when you're ready to submit.]

Faculty Notes

The email to the faculty member will have the subject line “Graduate Advisory Committee Invitation for [student name]”. It will include a link directly to the student’s POW and Committee record. The email will be sent from "NCSU Graduate School" (gradschool@gw.fis.ncsu.edu). Faculty Members need to go to the worklist to both accept and approve the POW (two check boxes). Your worklist can be found under the Faculty Center on MyPack Portal. If the student does not submit the POW, but saves it, you can access this through the Faculty Center, Advisement tab. Next to the advisee's name, choose Graduate Plan of Work from the drop-down menu, then click the >> button to see it. Once all committee members have accepted membership and approved the plan, it routes through work-flow to a DGP.
