All courses listed here can count as Supporting Electives toward the Master of Statistics degree. PhD students may not use 400-level courses on the plan of work. Again, consult your advisor and/or DGP if you have any questions about what will count toward your degree.

MA 784 Nonlinear Equations and Optimization

Course Description:This course is about numerical methods for nonlinear equations and optimization including Newton's method and quasi-Newton methods for nonlinear equations and unconstrained minimization problems, globally convergent modifications of Newton's method, and implementation issues. The course is a mix of analysis and computation and will be of interest to students in mathematics, engineering, and the sciences.

The texts are two books by Kelley, Iterative Methods for Linear and Nonlinear Equations. and Iterative Methods for Optimization. Both books can be downloaded for free from the course web page. I will have on-line notes for current topics in the field that go beyond the books.

The prerequisites are MA 580, good FORTRAN, C, or MATLAB programming skills, ability to use the NCSU eos/unity computing environment, and a knowledge of advanced calculus at the level of MA 511 or 512. The course grade will be determined by homework, programming assignments, and a presentation to the class.

From the instructor: If you're reading this then you or one of your students should be taking MA 784, Nonlinear Equations and Optimization, at NCSU this Spring. I offer this profound, life-altering experience in the Spring term of odd-numbered years.

The course is a state-of-the-art survey of numerical methods for nonlinear equations and unconstrained optimization. The course will be taught from my two books and on-line notes for recent advances. I'm attaching the full description of the course below.

AEE 435 Professional Presentations in Agricultural Organizations

Course Description:AEE 435 includes strategies and techniques for effective presentations in the food, agricultural, natural resources, as well as other professions, with emphasis on oral and visual presentation techniques. Presentation skills and strategies for formal and informal situations including conferences, poster presentations will be discussed.

AEE 460 Organizational Leadership Development in Agriculture and Life Sciences

Course Description:Students will examine the major theories and studies that are most relevant and informative with the regard to leadership in organizations. Students will develop skills in decision-making, management of organizations, and ethical leadership related to agricultural organizations.
