Computation for Undergraduates in Statistics Program


Financial Compensation

  • Stipends - Stipends will be provided for one cohort of CUSP scholars each year. The cohort will consist of six/eight students from NCSU and/or Meredith College, to be paid $4,000 during their first participating summer and $5,000 over the following academic year.
  • Travel and Commuting - CUSP scholars will be allocated $1000 each, annually, to attend a regional, national, or international conference to present their research. The CUSP scholars will also attend NSF-sponsored CSUMS meetings each year, the costs for which are estimated at $800/student. Funds will cover travel, lodging, registration, and meals. Commuting costs include the mileage required for CUSP scholars to take day-trips within the Research Triangle region as well as to Washington, DC, to visit industry and government sites in which relevant research is underway. Mileage for participating students and investigators to travel to these sites is estimated at .445/mile x 5000 miles.
  • Supplies - Six bundles of laptop/software supplies are provided, owned and maintained by the Statistics department in Year I and Year IV of the project. Two additional laptops with appropriate software will be purchased in Year II for two additional students from Meredith. They will be purchased and maintained by NCSU Department of Statistics. The laptops will be used by each new cohort of students. Laptops will be devoted in full (100%) to CUSP research and training activities. In addition, each of the CUSP scholars will be provided with $250 in annual funds to help them produce posters for presentations at the NCSU Undergraduate Research Conference as well as at other local, regional, and national conferences.


Qualifications Expected of Program Participants

To be eligible for this program the NCSU students should have Statistics as their sole or first major and be a full time student making sufficient progress toward their degree. Preference will be given to students with a minimum GPA of 3.5 and that have not receive a grade lower than B in CSC courses.
