About the Course

Statistics 507 is the first in a two course sequence in statistical methods for students in the social sciences. The topics covered provide the basic introduction to statistical inference in the framework of basic data analysis that many students will use in their future graduate work.

Course Objectives

  1. ST507 is a concept based course that attempts to help students build a framework for using statistcal inference in their research or careers. After completing this course students will be able to:
  2. describe the process of statistical inference
  3. identify sampling methods that are appropriate for inference
  4. summarize data with graphical and numeric methods.
  5. explain the concept of a sampling distribution
  6. use inference to determine the margin of error for a variety of settings
  7. use inference to determine statistical significance in a variety of settings
