INTRODUCTION TO MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING

Section 001  For Mature, Motivated, Disciplined Students

For since the fabric of the universe is most perfect and the work of a wise Creator, nothing at all takes place in the universe in which some rule of maximum or minimum does not appear.

Leonhard Euler

If a man will begin with certainties he will end with doubts, but if he will be content to begin with doubts he shall end in certainties.

Francis Bacon, Advancement of Learning

It's choice - not chance - that determines your destiny.

John Dewey

If you don't believe in random sampling, the next time you have a blood test tell the doctor to take it all.

Operations Research myths this course will disprove:
Myth1:
"If I had one hour left to live, I would live it in operations research class because it would seem to last forever!"
A student's lament

Myth 2: "If it moves, it's biology; if it changes color, it's chemistry; if it breaks, it's physics; if it puts you to sleep, it's operations research.
Bob Hogg, University of Iowa

Myth 3: Math class is tough!

Beginning of Semester

Fall 2012

Welcome to Section 001 of OR/MA 504!!

Our first class meeting will be 1:30-2:45 Monday, August 20 in Harrelson Hall Room 233

Throughout the semester we will meet in Daniels Hall room 214, MW, 1:30 - 2:45. Check Registration and Records now to be certain that you are enrolled in the class.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The term operations research means a scientific approach to decision making, where the objective is to determine how best to design and operate a system, usually under conditions that require allocation of limited resources. OR/MA 504 is a survey course in the theory and methods of mathematical programming to meet the needs of students from a variety of backgrounds. Topics in linear, nonlinear, and dynamic programming comprise the course. The major prerequisite is familiarity with vector and matrix manipulations; some differential calculus is required for the discussion of nonlinear programming. Computer use will be emphasized to permit students to learn the material in a manner consistent with the ways in which these techniques are applied in other courses and in professional work.

See you the first day of class!
